Neuro Ophthalmology

The Neuro-Ophthalmology Department at the National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital (NIOH) is a specialized unit that focuses on eye problems related to the nervous system, where the eye and brain work together. It deals with conditions where vision loss, double vision, or eye movement problems are caused not by the eye itself but by diseases of the optic nerve, brain, or the connections between them.

Clinical Examination and Investigations

  1. Detailed neuro-ophthalmic history and systemic correlation.
  2. Visual field testing (Automated/Manual Perimetry).
  3. Pupillary reflex and color vision assessment.
  4. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL).
  5. CT Scan / MRI (Orbit and Brain) for correlation of neurological disorders.
  6. Diplopia charting and Hess chart plotting.
  7. Neurological assessment in coordination with neurologists.

Procedures

  1. Neostigmine test
  2. Lumbar puncture for evaluation of raised intracranial pressure (in collaboration).
  3. Neuro-rehabilitation planning for patients with visual pathway disorders.
