Pediatric Ophthalmology

The Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus Department at NIOH is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of eye diseases in children, as well as the management of ocular motility disorders in all age groups. The department provides specialized care for congenital, developmental, and acquired pediatric eye conditions, ensuring early detection and lifelong visual development.

Clinical Examination and Investigation

The department provides child-friendly, advanced diagnostic services:

  1. Pediatric Visual Acuity Assessment – age-appropriate vision tests using charts, pictures, and preferential looking techniques.
  2. Cycloplegic Refraction – for accurate detection of refractive errors.
  3. Ocular Motility & Alignment Tests – Hirschberg test, Krimsky test, cover/uncover, alternate cover, and prism bar cover tests.
  4. Orthoptic Evaluation – binocular vision and fusion assessment.
  5. Retinoscopy – for pediatric refractive error evaluation.
  6. Slit Lamp & Fundus Examination.
  7. Ultrasound B-Scan – for congenital cataract, retinoblastoma, and opaque media.
  8. Posterior Segment Photography – for documentation and follow-up.

Procedures

The department provides specialized procedures for diagnosis and therapy:

  1. Amblyopia Therapy – occlusion (patching) and penalization
  2. Orthoptic & Vision Therapy Exercises.
  3. Botulinum Toxin Injection – for selected cases of strabismus and nystagmus.
  4. Probing & Syringing of Nasolacrimal Duct – for congenital dacryocystitis.
  5. Chalazion Curettage & Minor Pediatric Procedures.
  6. Prism Therapy – for small-angle deviations and diplopia.

Surgical Services

The department provides advanced pediatric surgical services:

  1. Strabismus Surgery – recession, resection, adjustable sutures for squint correction.
  2. Congenital Cataract Surgery – lensectomy, IOL implantation with amblyopia management.
  3. Congenital Glaucoma Surgery – goniotomy, trabeculotomy.
  4. Pediatric Oculoplastic Surgeries – ptosis correction, eyelid malposition correction.
  5. Nystagmus Surgery – Kestenbaum-Anderson procedure.
  6. Congenital Lacrimal Surgery – Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), dacryocystectomy.
  7. Retinoblastoma Evaluation & Referral Surgery Support.

  • Amblyopia Prevention & Treatment: Structured therapy for lazy eye to maximize visual potential.

  • ROP screening and treatment: Through out the week except Friday with free of cost.
  • Examination under anesthesia: For diagnosis, evaluation and management of various pediatric eye diseases

  • School Eye Health Programs: Mass screening to detect refractive errors and prevent avoidable blindness.
