Departments That We Provide

Vitro retina

The Vitro retina Department at NIOH provides comprehensive diagnostic, medical, and surgical management of retinal and vitreous diseases. Equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and microsurgical technology, the department offers specialized care for diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, ROP, Vitreous Hemorrhage, Endophthalmities , and other vitreoretinal disorders.

Clinical Examination and Investigation

The department offers advanced diagnostic facilities for early detection and monitoring:

  1. Indirect Ophthalmoscopy – for retinal and vitreous evaluation.
  2. Fundus Photography (Color & Wide-field Imaging).
  3. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – macular and retinal layer analysis.
  4. Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA).
  5. B-Scan Ultrasonography – for opaque media and posterior segment pathology.
  6. OCT Angiography (OCTA) – non-invasive vascular imaging.
  7. Microperimetry – macular function assessment.
  8. Fundus Autofluorescence Imaging.
  9. ROP evaluation

Procedures

The Vitro retina Department performs both therapeutic and diagnostic procedures:

  1. Intravitreal Injections – Anti-VEGF, steroids, and antibiotics.
  2. Retinal Laser Photocoagulation – for diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears.
  3. Focal/Grid Laser – for diabetic macular edema.
  4. Panretinal Photocoagulation (PRP).
  5. Cryotherapy – for peripheral retinal lesions and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
  6. ROP Screening & Treatment – laser and intravitreal therapy for premature infants.

Surgical Services

The department provides modern vitreoretinal surgical interventions:

  1. Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) – for retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, endophthalmitis, and macular surgeries.
  2. Macular Hole & Epiretinal Membrane Surgery.
  3. Vitrectomy for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.
  4. Complex Retinal Detachment Surgeries – with silicone oil, gas tamponade, or heavy liquids.
  5. Vitrectomy with Intraocular Foreign Body Removal.
  6. Combined Phaco-Vitrectomy – for cataract with vitreoretinal pathology.
  7. Management of Ocular Trauma – posterior segment reconstruction.
  8. Endolaser Photocoagulation during Vitrectomy.
  9. Submacular Surgery – for certain macular diseases.
  10. Pneumatic Retinopexy – for selected retinal detachments.

Vitro retina Services – Treatment Plans & Strategies

The department ensures comprehensive retinal care through a multi-level approach:

  • Early Detection & Screening: Diabetic retinopathy screening clinics, AMD monitoring, and ROP programs.
  • Medical & Surgical Integration: Combination of intravitreal therapy, laser, and surgery for optimal outcomes.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy Care: Dedicated programs for prevention and treatment, aligned with national diabetes initiatives.
  • Pediatric Retina Services: Early ROP detection and intervention for premature infants.
  • Community Outreach: Awareness campaigns for diabetic eye disease and retinal health.
  • Training & Research: Resident and fellowship training, participation in multicenter trials on retinal diseases.
  • Accessible & Affordable Services: Subsidized treatment for diabetic retinopathy, ROP, and retinal diseases under blindness prevention strategies.
