Oculoplasty

The Oculoplasty Department of NIOH is dedicated to the diagnosis, medical management, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with disorders of the eyelids, lacrimal system, orbit, and ocular tumors. The department combines advanced diagnostic technologies with modern surgical expertise to deliver comprehensive care.

Clinical Examination and Investigation

The department offers specialized investigations for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, including:

  1. Hess Chart – for assessment of ocular motility and extraocular muscle function.
  2. Prism Cover Test – for detection and quantification of strabismus.
  3. Syringing & Probing Test (SPT) / Sac Patency Test – to evaluate lacrimal drainage function.
  4. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – high-resolution imaging of retinal and anterior segment structures.
  5. Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) – for anterior segment tumor and structural evaluation.
  6. B-Scan Ultrasonography – for orbital and intraocular pathology detection.
  7. Anterior Segment Photography – for documentation and progression monitoring.
  8. Lacrimal System Assessment – complete evaluation of lacrimal pathway obstruction.
  9. Growth Assessment – monitoring size and progression of orbital/ocular tumors or lesions.
  10.  Proptosis measurement by Hertel’s exopthalmometer

Procedures

  1. Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Injection – for blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, and strabismus.
  2. Intralesional & Periocular Steroid Injections (Triamcinolone Acetonide - TA) – for orbital and eyelid lesions.
  3. Retinoblastoma Staging – clinical and radiological staging for treatment planning.
  4. Laser & Thermotherapy – for intraocular tumor ablation.
  5. Diagnostic Biopsy – incisional or excisional biopsy for histopathological confirmation.

Surgical Services

The department provides comprehensive oculoplastic, orbital, and oncology surgical care:

  1. Correction of Ptosis and Strabismus (Squint Surgery).
  2. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR): Laser and conventional techniques.
  3. Lid Repair & Reconstructive Surgeries – for trauma, tumor excision, and congenital anomalies.
  4. Blepharoplasty, Entropion & Ectropion Correction.
  5. Electrocautery – for management of trichiasis.
  6. Orbital Fat/Bone Decompression – for thyroid eye disease and orbital pressure relief.
  7. Orbital Volume Augmentation – for anophthalmic socket and enophthalmos correction.
  8. Artificial Eye (Ocular Prosthesis) Implantation.
  9. Orbital Fracture & Trauma Management.
  10. Tumor Removal: Incisional/Excisional Biopsy, Frozen section biopsy of orbital, eyelid, and intraocular tumors.
