Ophthalmology Blue

The Blue Department at NIOH provides general ophthalmic services for adults, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of common eye conditions, routine vision care, and preventive eye health.

Clinical Examination and Investigation

  1. Comprehensive history taking and symptom assessment.
  2. Visual acuity testing – distance and near vision evaluation.
  3. Refraction assessment – for prescription glasses or contact lenses.
  4. Slit-lamp examination – anterior segment evaluation.
  5. Fundus examination – direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy.
  6. Tonometry – intraocular pressure measurement for glaucoma screening.
  7. Pupillary reactions, color vision, and ocular motility testing.
  8. Basic imaging – anterior segment photography and B-scan if needed.
  9. Screening for systemic diseases affecting the eyes (diabetes, hypertension).

Procedures

  1. Surgical procedure: Cataract and DCR surgery
  2. Minor in-office procedures – chalazion incision, foreign body removal, punctal plug insertion.
  3. Medical management – eye drops, oral medications, and topical therapies.
  4. Follow-up monitoring for chronic eye conditions (glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye).
  5. Preventive eye care advice – lifestyle, nutrition, and ocular hygiene.

Treatment Strategies and Goals

  • Early detection and treatment of common eye diseases.
  • Visual rehabilitation through corrective lenses and low-vision aids (in coordination with Low Vision Department).
  • Chronic disease management – ongoing monitoring of glaucoma, diabetes-related eye disease, and hypertension-related eye complications.
  • Referral system – patients needing specialized care are referred to sub-specialty departments such as Cataract, Cornea, Retina, Glaucoma, or Neuro-Ophthalmology.
  • Patient education – promoting awareness of eye health, regular check-ups, and preventive measures.
